Dr. Eduardo de Marchena is the Associate Dean for International Medicine, Professor of Medicine and Surgery. He is an interventional cardiologist and during his tenure at the University, Dr. de Marchena has spearheaded many key programs such as the Heart Transplantation and the Interventional Cardiology training Program. He has served as the Chairman of the University of Miami Medical Group, as Chief of the Division of Cardiology and as Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He is the pioneer and Program Director, Eberhard Grube International Structural Heart Training at University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine.
As a researcher, his work has resulted in several patents, and patent applications in percutaneous cardiovascular devices. He has authored and co-authored over 200 peer review papers, abstracts, and book chapters.
As Associate Dean of International Medicine, Dr. de Marchena leads the International Medicine Institute, Division of Education and Training and the International Research Division. Through the International Education and Training Division, the University educates and trains medical students and physicians from throughout the world. To date, over 6,000 professionals have participated in the education and training division.
The Cuban Medical Society and Alpha Omega Alpha have recognized Dr. Eduardo de Marchena for his contribution to the medical field. He is a recipient of the University of Miami Iron Arrow Award. The American Heart Association presented to him the Cor’ Vitae Award in 2009. He received the Merit Award Visiting International Professor in several international universities. The University of Miami Medical Alumni Association honored him with the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award. Later in 2016, he received the Diversity Award, Department of Medicine State of Department Address. Dr. de Marchena was inducted as the 2017 recipient of the Medical Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame Award.
